Research Interests
Prof. Allweis has had a longstanding interest in personalized risk-adapted breast cancer screening, which led to her current choice of a sabbatical with Prof. Regina Barzilay’s lab at MIT. Her aim is to explore the clinical integration and implementation of Mirai, a deep learning model developed by Prof. Barzilay and her team, trained to determine breast cancer risk based on mammography images. Although it has been widely validated, Mirai has yet to be implemented on a large scale in a population-based screening program. Integrating such a model into Israel’s national breast cancer screening program could help to focus screening efforts on high-risk women and improve resource allocation and health equity. Toward that end, she is collaborating with HMO leaders and research institutes in Israel and hopes to transform the landscape of breast cancer screening in Israel.
